The Darkness Ahead (2021)

The Darkness Ahead - drawing by Harvey Dog 2021

fading light
merges into
the darkness ahead

stars soar through
blackhole dancefloors,
free, unconstrained,
I ride satellites
seeking wisdom

a levitating
arthritic finger
points
at a broken tree
and whispers:
“over there”

I approach tentatively,
flames dance
in shadows,
words burnt into
peeling bark
slowly
revealing
mysteries…

&&&

I awake
perplexed,
bewildered,
confused

clouds roll by
spreading darkness
in their wake

rain pelts dirty windows
glassy tear streams,
muddy streaks
stain forgotten dreams

I seek
profundity, knowledge,
wisdom,
a light
within darkness

words burn into
paper,
out of control
…alive

the critic whispers:
is there meaning?
is there reason?

I close the book,
unadorned tears
etch lines
into soggy
withered skin

liberated

I merge into
the darkness ahead

Notes

  • The fading light of life & attempting to become one with the darkness of depression.
  • Grammarly’s Tone Detector rates this poem as Confident (****) Worried (***) & Sad (**). I can’t argue with Grammarly!
